Film Premiere: Venus, Priests, and Superwomen
When Providence College cancelled the campus production of
the Vagina Monologues last year, administrators probably didn't anticipate the
campus-wide protests and the angry nests of controversy that would spring up
among both students and faculty. The public perception of Monologues as
titillating or as feminist touting misses a seething undercurrent that connects
this show to deeper issues -- like sexual assault. Arguably, these undercurrents
have given the show its phenomenal traction; they also make it still,
a target for suppression.
The documentary film "Venus, Priests, and Superwomen" directed by
Alexia Kosmider catches the chaotic aftermath of Providence
College president Rev. Brian J. Shanley’s decision to ban the Monologues from
campus -- the noisy protesters, counter-protesters, and a debate that shook
what one student calls an apathetic Catholic campus out of its silence.
