If convicted of a domestic violence crime, the batterer must undergo a Batterers Intervention Program. A Batterers Intervention Program is a psycho-educational group led by trained professional facilitators. Each meeting is an hour and a half to two hours for a minimum of 20 weeks. Fees are collected, however programs can accommodate if you need help. If you have financial trouble, inform your parole officer or program to discuss options. Batterers learn to identify abusive behaviors and are taught to react non-abusively and instead communicate with their partner. Batterers Intervention Programs differ from and are not replaceable by substance abuse treatments, mental health services, family/marital/couples or other counseling. Batterers can voluntarily attend by contacting the program that serves the area they are living in. Even if batterers voluntarily sign up, it is expected that they will follow through with the commitment and adhere to attendance policies. Participants are held accountable for their attendance, they must be on time, and cannot miss a meeting. Here is a list of the intervention programs in Rhode Island.
