Communications Internships
  • Communications Intern

  • Graphic Design Intern


The Communications Intern will:

  • Create, distribute, and archive a bi-weekly news digest to help monitor local and national media coverage of domestic violence
  • Support & archive the RICADV's public awareness campaigns
  • Draft & archive press announcements for the RICADV and our member agencies
  • Contribute to social media
  • Update website content
  • Draft and distribute e-newsletters
  • Provide general office support, including answering the phone
  • Complete other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience with email marketing tools (i.e. Constant Contact, MailChimp)
  • Experience with web Content Management Systems
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Superb writing skills
  • Solid research skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A professional and positive demeanor
  • Experience with graphic design and proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite preferred.

The Graphic Design Intern will:

  • Work closely with the RICADV's Communications Team as well as other staff to produce a variety of design deliverables
  • Assist with web and print design for the RICADV

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team

Layout and publication experience preferred.

Proficiency in other Adobe Creative Suite applications preferred.

Experience with web Content Management Systems and/or email marketing tools (e.g., Constant Contact) is a plus.

The intern will be given access to a Mac laptop and design software. Access to one's own equipment and/or software is a plus.

Policy Internships

  • Policy Intern

Interns with an interest in policy will support the RICADV’s legislative campaigns and other systems change work for the organization.

The role of the Policy Intern will include researching policy issues related to domestic violence in order to support our legislative advocacy; conducting research on legal issues related to domestic violence (e.g. criminal law, housing law, constitutional law); writing policy memos; analyzing state domestic violence data; and organizing lobby days for RICADV supporters at the State House.

Policy Interns will learn about:

  • The dynamics of domestic abuse
  • Legal and policy issues related to domestic violence (including those relating to the criminal justice system, divorce and child custody, and state and local systems)
  • Data analysis and applying data to policy goals
  • Legislative advocacy

A successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Strong note-taking and listening skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite
  • Strong research skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to work as part of a team

Prevention Internships

  • Prevention & Education Intern


Interns with an interest in prevention work will participate in the CDC primary prevention initiative DELTA FOCUS and the Ten Men Project. They will also assist in the planning of training events and in raising awareness for prevention programs.

Prevention Interns will learn about:

  • The dynamics of domestic abuse
  • Strategies for preventing intimate partner violence
  • State resources for violence prevention programming

SOAR Internships

SOAR (Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships) is a task force of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence comprised of survivors of domestic and dating violence. SOAR's mission is to promote and advocate for the elimination of domestic violence in Rhode Island and to embody and give visibility to the voices of abused women.

  • Creative Communications Intern

  • Administrative Intern

The Creative Communications Intern will help tell survivors’ stories in engaging, inspiring and informative ways to various audiences through various formats. The intern will primarily be a multimedia storyteller but will provide administrative support for SOAR as needed.

A successful intern will have excellent writing skills along with abilities in photography and/or videography.

The Creative Communications Intern should be self-motivated, creative, and able to work in collaboration with staff and SOAR members to capture SOAR members’ voices and experiences, bringing their stories and advocacy efforts to life, through photos, videos, written narratives, and other multimedia.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Updating the SOAR website
  • Contributing to social media
  • Establishing blogging and vlogging practices
  • Drafting and distributing internal e-newsletters
  • Supporting various outreach and research activities
  • Event planning, including support of SOAR’s nationally-recognized, award-winning original play Behind Closed Doors

The intern will attend evening SOAR meetings that occur once a month, usually on the first Monday of each month. The intern will also help facilitate SOAR members’ subcommittees.

A successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to uphold confidentiality standards, and a professional and positive demeanor.

The Administrative Intern will support SOAR in various initiatives, programs, and office work. The SOAR Intern will assist with meeting coordination and set-up, website updates, social media, internal newsletters, outreach, research, and event planning, including support of SOAR’s nationally-recognized, award-winning original play Behind Closed Doors.

The intern will attend evening SOAR meetings that occur once a month, usually on the first Monday of each month. The intern will also help facilitate SOAR members' subcommittees.

The SOAR Intern will enjoy the freedom to explore creative ways to tell survivors’ stories, solicit funding, get community members involved and attract new members.

A successful candidate will possess:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well with a group
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality standards
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Creativity and drive
  • Strong technical abilities
  • A professional and positive demeanor

A successful candidate will also have a flexible schedule, with day, evening and weekend hours available.
