Overcoming Barriers

While we encourage you to get involved as an active bystander, we understand that bystanders face very real challenges that may prevent them from taking action.

As a bystander to domestic or dating violence, you may feel that you shouldn't interfere with a private relationship or family matter, that it would be intrusive or nosy to get involved, or you may simply doubt your ability to help.

To address your personal challenges and barriers to taking action, ask yourself these questions:

  • When have I been a passive bystander before?
  • What bothered me about the situation?
  • What kept me from taking action?
  • How did I feel afterward?
  • Reflecting back, what actions could I have safely taken to help?
