From 2001 to 2011, at least 82 Rhode Islanders died as a result of domestic violence. 22 domestic violence related deaths occurred in 2010 and 2011 alone.
The victims of the 65 murders that occured between 2001-2011 are broken down as follows:
Current intimate partner or spouse: 30
Former intimate partner or spouse: 15
Family member: 10
Child-in-Common: 4
Other: 5
18% of the abusers from 2001to 2011 committed suicide after killing, or attempting to kill, not only their intimate partner but others as well (children and bystanders).
From 2001 to 2009, perpetrators received the following sentences:
Life: 1
Less than 10 years to serve: 8
Between 10 to 30 years to serve: 7
Over 30 years to serve: 8
Children were present for 12 of the above incidents either witnessing the homicide, discovering their loved one’s body, or being killed themselves.
Of the 65 perpetrators from 2001 to 2011, 54 were men and 11 were women. Since 1980, 87% of perpetrators responsible for domestic violence deaths have been men.
